Where did January go?!

Hi LP Families! I hope you have been having a safe and healthy January. We've been so extremely busy here in LP Art so I have lots to share! We've been doing some pretty messy things like, clay, glazing, paper mache, painting and watercolor!

3rd Grade

3rd Graders have had a busy January! FIRST, we started off by glazing our clay projects! Students learned how to create a pinch pot, a coil and slip and score pieces together. Then we learned about GLAZE. Glaze is the color we put on clay. It is made up of clay, water, glass for shine and metals for color. When the glaze gets hot in my kiln (clay oven) the glaze changes color, just like toast in a toaster! Their work looks amazing and is on display in our main hallway here at LP. Check it out!

3rd Graders also started their paper maché Ice Cream Cones! First we learned paper maché is taking newspaper and tape to create something 3-Dimensional. Then we learned SO MUCH about colors and color mixing in order to create our flavors! Students are mixing flavor colors and giving their flavors crazy names! Students learned about the Primary and Secondary colors, as well as our color equations, and how to make a TINT (adding white) and a SHADE (adding black). Students now know which two Primary colors make which Secondary color. This takes a lot of practice and repetition, but they are doing so well.

4th Grade

4th graders are starting January with a schedule change. They will now see me for art twice a week instead of just once! I am so excited to see them more often and be able to accomplish more art-making in a shorter period of time. 4th graders have spent January creating their clay projects! Students created clay Bobble Heads! They created the head with a PINCH POT upside down! Then they created the body by rolling a cone shape and slipping and scoring on arms and legs. Their work is so creative! They are currently adding color with GLAZE! Glaze is the color we put on clay. It is made up of clay, water, glass for shine and metals for color. When the glaze gets hot in my kiln (clay oven) the glaze changes color, just like toast in a toaster!

5th Grade

5th Graders had a busy January! They finished glazing their clay bowls, which are currently on display in the main hallway! Then we worked on a fun watercolor painting project called FAMOUS PAIRS! Students brainstormed two objects or people that commonly go together. Then they drew and painted the objects with watercolor pencils, a brand new material for them. Then we added color in the background with watercolor paints! Their work is cute and hilarious!

Last... students have been working on their shoe design projects! This is a student favorite I bring back each year. Students choose a shoe style to design based on the elements of design we talk about as a group: Color, Patterns, Relevance, Uniqueness and Craftsmanship. Students then add color to their designs with the material of their choice (markers, colored pencils, watercolor pencils). The whole point is to "sell their shoe" to their classmates. Students will then vote on their classmates' shoes to determine the top 4 well designed and crafted shoes. These students will then get to turn their shoes into real shoes with me! The voting is anonymous and students don't know who's shoes belong to who, so it is a very fair voting process. They are very motivate and are creating some of their best work yet!
