November Already?!

Hello LP Families!

Welcome to my first blog post of the year! Boy, has it been a busy year so far! It is my intent to post a blog update once a month to let you know what is going on in the art room. This will be a long one because it encompasses TWO months and we have done so much in our first two months of art. Please be sure to check out the tabs above about ARTSONIA and DISPLAY MY ART.

Artsonia is our digital portfolio. Students will be uploading their artwork there when projects are finished. Students love when their families check out their art on Artsonia before they bring it home. You can click here to see your child's artwork : https://www.artsonia.com/connect/W2RHX9TS

Display My Art is our yearly fundraiser. Students create a piece of artwork in class that is turned into different products you can purchase. We will even have EI Spirit Wear available! 40% of your purchase comes right back to the art room. Keep an eye out in November for information coming home about that!

3rd and 5th graders are starting the year off coming to art two times in a six day cycle. I basically get to see them twice a week! 4th graders are coming once in a six day cycle. In February, we will flip flop and 4th grade will come twice, and 3rd and 5th will come once.

Okay, so without further ado, check out what we've been working on in the art room below!

3rd Grade

3rd Graders are doing very well coming into the LP art room for the first time. They have learned a lot about our art room rules and routines and are doing well taking care of our materials and cleaning up after themselves.

CUBE PROJECT: On our first day of art students learned about street artist ThankYouX and his cube murals. Students created a cube drawing inspired by ThankYouX and we put our cubes together to create a collaborative mural.

ART ROOM TOUR: Students watched a video of my giving a tour of the important places in the art room, and then went on a scavenger hunt to find all of those places.

ProCREATE EMOJIS: Students learned how to use a new digital drawing app called ProCREATE. Students have learned SO much about digital art and design. They are practicing using different brushes and working in layers to create strong artwork. Their first project was an emoji design project. They designed an emoji that represents themselves!

ARTSONIA: Students learned how to use our digital portfolio app Artsonia! Students learned why artists keep portfolios and how to track their growth in art. Be sure to check out the Artsonia tab above to see how you can look at your child's portfolio!

SUMI-E INK CLUB: Students participated in something called Sumi-e Ink Club! Students learned about the history of Sumi-e ink dating all the way back to Japan/China over 2000 years ago. Students learned what it means to collaborate and created artwork with their peers using Sumi-e ink. Students even got to practice making their own Sumi-e ink! I loved watching them work together and compliment each other's work.

WATERCOLOR SELF-PORTRAITS: Students are currently working on their watercolor self-portraits! Students learned about the difference between portraits, and self-portraits, and learned the steps for drawing a cartoon version of a self-portrait. Students are currently working on learning watercolor paint techniques to add color to their self portraits! Stay tuned next month for a post on those finished pieces!

4th Grade

4th graders are doing very well coming into the LP art room for the first time. Last year they had art on a cart and I came to them in their home classrooms. So coming to art this year is a whole new level of awesome!

5th Grade

5th Graders are excited to be back in the art room for the first time since 3rd grade! After having art on a cart for a year they are doing well transitioning back to the art room.

CUBE PROJECT: On our first day of art students learned about street artist ThankYouX and his cube murals. Students created a cube drawing inspired by ThankYouX and we put our cubes together to create a collaborative mural.

SURREALIST ART MASH ON ProCREATE: Students are honing their digital art skills on our ProCREATE app. Students have learned SO much about digital art and design in the past year. They are practicing using different brushes and working in layers to create strong artwork. Their first project was a SURREALIST ART MASH. Students learned about the Surrealism art movement and artist Salvador Dali. Students learned surrealist art is inspired by dreams, imagination and anything odd or strange. Students took a PERSON/ANIMAL, PLACE, and THING/ACTION and put them together to create an art mash. An art mash is 3 seemingly random things put together to create an interesting piece of art. Their creations are so unique!

ARTSONIA: Students reviewed how to use our digital portfolio app Artsonia! Students learned why artists keep portfolios and how to track their growth in art. Be sure to check out the Artsonia tab above to see how you can look at your child's portfolio!

PAPER MACHE ALEBRIJES: For Hispanic Heritgage Month, students learned about Alebrije sculptures first created in Oaxaca, Mexico by artist Pedro Linares. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. Students learned about Pedro Linares' dreams which first inspired the original Alebrijes. Students built their alebrijes out of paper mache and are currently painting them with bright, colorful, patterned designs!
