We've just finished our third full week of school and we are really digging in! We continue to work on practicing routines in the art room that help our class run smoothly. Two of these routines include a "Minute of Mindfulness" and saying our "Art Room Mantra".

Our Minute of Mindfulness helps us relax and become present in the art room with exercises like the singing bowl, yoga, meditation and listening to music. Soon the kids will be leading the exercises.

We are also starting each class with reciting our Art Room Mantra. We discussed how having a mantra can help set us up for success by creating a positive, growth mindset in the art room. Art is often hard and we are working on being open-minded to new things, rather than stressing about them. The kids have even learned how to say our art room mantra in sign language!!

5th graders are working on their How We Express Ourselves unit! This unit is all about using a unique language to communicate. This language is emojis! This is one of my favorite projects each year because the students always come up with unique designs that really represent who they are. This year the kids will be designing 4 emojis that communicate something about them. We have some very creative ideas already! Next week we will learn how to create VALUE/SHADING to make our emojis pop off the page!

3rd and 4th grade's first project was a watercolor painting of their choice for their Square1Art project. I like to let students choose their subject of choice for this project. We learned/reviewed how to use and take care of our watercolor paints and materials. We learned how to mix watercolor paints and talked about the word "Craftsmanship". Check out some kids in action below!
