It' been awhile since I've been able to write a post, but trust me there's been plenty going on around here! All grades are continuing to work on their paper mache projects! We've been building for about 2-3 weeks now and have officially gone through over 40 rolls of tape!! These projects are looking amazing and our students continue to surprise me with how creative and determined they are! Most classes are getting ready to glue or paint right after break. Look for these finished paper mache projects at the LP Art Spotlight during the Science Fair, March 15th!!!
3rd Grade
I have two different paper mache projects going on in third grade, but they both revolve around food! The first project is "Food Memories". We talked about the word Nostalgia and how sometimes when we hear a certain song or eat a certain food it brings us back to a time in our lives and reminds us of a memory. Students wrote about a food that reminded them of a time in their life, and are creating that food!
The other classes are creating paper mache ice cream cones! I told them I own an ice cream store (not really!) and am looking for new Ice Cream Flavor Creators! Students will use their new color mixing skills to paint the ice cream and create new and exciting flavors for my store!
4th Grade
Fourth graders are creating paper mache monsters! We read the book Leonardo the Terrible Monster about a monster who was told he had to be scary, but just couldn't be. We talked about what stereotypes are and that it's important to break stereotypes, especially if it is at the expense of making someone feel bad. We discovered Leonardo didn't need to be scary just because everyone thought he should be, but that he could be kind and be a good friend. So 4th graders are creating monsters that defy stereotypes and are creating silly monsters with big personalities for our Monster world!
5th Grade
Fifth graders are making paper mache animals inspired by Alebrijes, or Mexican Spirit Animals, featured in the movie Coco! They brainstormed their own character traits and have chosen an animal that shares the same traits! We watched a video of people in Oaxaca, Mexico creating real Alebrijes and students loved watching them carve wood animals and paint intricate details!
Google Doodle!
Each year Google has a contest for K-12 students to design a piece of art for their homepage, called the Google Doodle. Kids from across the country submit their designs based on a theme. This year's Theme is: "When I Grow Up, I Hope..." the winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 for their school to buy technology! Last year a Kindergartner won so there is really a chance for everyone!
I am trying to make my way around the school and give all students a chance to create something to send in. So far I've had the chance to work with Miss Blackmer's Class, Mr. barberi's Class, and Mrs. Lehman's class. See some photos from Mrs. Lehman's class below!
All entries must be signed by an adult so you may see these coming home.
Please sign them and send them back ASAP, as March 18th is the deadline.
5th Grade Weave-In!
I figured the day before February break would be the perfect day for a "Weave-In"! A weave-in is kind of like a read-in, but with weaving instead of reading! 5th graders got together today in our Large Group Instruction room and socialized, relaxed and worked on their weaving projects together as a group! It's nice to create art together outside of art class, where we are usually so busy trying to accomplish many things in such a short period of time. Thanks to Mr. Hiley for letting us do this today!
