Happy almost winter break! We have been so incredibly busy in the art room! Each grade is working in a different medium! I am so proud of our kids and how much perseverance I have been seeing, especially around this time of year! I hope you all get to do something special during the week and a half off and enjoy your time with your kiddos. Please check the bottom of this post for a winter break drawing challenge I shared with the kids today! - Miss Ryan
3rd Grade
Third graders have been really enjoying working with clay! Ask them how to make a pinch pot, roll a coil and how to slip and score two pieces of clay together! They paid so much attention to details that they are mostly independent and need very little help from me! I am so proud of them. It also gave me the chance to snap a few extra pictures! Enjoy! After break we will be talking about color mixing and will paint our clay pots.
4th Grade
4th graders are continuing their Super Hero Self-Portrait project, part of our Who We Are PYP planner! They learned that "people of different races, ages and genders have made contributions to their communities that last a lifetime". On the art side of things, they learned gesture drawing, or how to draw people. Next they have created their super hero persona and have chosen a "cause" that they would like to use their super powers to help! They are finding that drawing people is not easy and takes a lot of "drawing stamina" and persistence. Some classes have moved on to the final step of the project, drawing and painting the background of where their super hero uses their powers! This project has several parts and takes awhile, but the results are always phenomenal, which is why I bring this project back every year! Stay tuned for more after break!
5th Grade
5th graders have been working on their Emoji designs, part of our How We Express Ourselves PYP planner. Students learned that "people use unique language to communicate different perspectives". In the age of technology emojis are everywhere! Students have created some extremely unique emojis that express who they are. Students have also learned how to use colored pencils to create different "VALUES" or shades in their drawing. This means when done correctly, their drawings will have a three-dimensional quality to them! Students learned that light creates value. This has been a challenge for some, but with a little practice they will be pros! I am proud of them for taking on a skill that is really more of for a middle-school level. I wish I had more pictures but I've been quite busy make sure students understand this concept!
12 Days of Break Drawing Challenge!
I challenged students to make a little art every day over break! It is important for our drawing skills but also for building our creativity! Students should spend at least 5-10 minutes on their drawing every day.
After break, please bring Miss Ryan the completed challenge drawings for a special treat! Drawings must be brought to Miss Ryan by Friday January 4th!
Grown ups, please sign the back of the sheet to acknowledge that your child has spent at least 5-10 minutes on each drawing. Have a great break!
