I am a couple days late on this post as I had to go out of town on Friday and did not have time to post before I left! We are finally into the swing of things here in the art room. We have been practicing our art room routines for awhile now and we seem to be getting the hang of things which helps keep our classroom running smoothly. Each grade is working hard on their current project!

3rd Grade:

Third graders are continuing their Who We Are PYP unit of study. After drawing their Extreme Dream Houses BIG on good paper, some classes have finally started painting! We learned how to mix and layer watercolors, as well as how to properly take care of our paintbrushes and paint. A few classes even got to vote on names for our Quiet Critters! Quiet Critters are fluffy little critters that come out when tables are being extra quiet while they work.

4th Grade:

Fourth graders are taking a one week break from weaving to try what 5th graders did last week, Sumi-e Ink Club. I had all the materials out from last week so I figured it would be a great opportunity for our 4th graders to get the chance to collaborate on a piece of artwork together. Students learned how to use black Japanese ink to create a piece of art with their classmates. They also got the chance to try making their own ink using a grinding stone, a Japanese calligraphy tradition. They worked together, shared a space and materials, and created inspiring works of art without being able to erase. If you want to know more about Sumi-e Ink Club, check out last week's blog post for a video!

5th Grade:

Fifth graders began their weaving unit this week! They have learned a lot of new vocabulary! Students learned what FIBERS are, and how fibers are spun on a spinning wheel to be turned into thread or yarn. Fibers can come from either a plant or animal, such as cotton or wool. Students began setting up their LOOMS, the frame we weave on. They will be learning how to weave on their looms next week, as well as how to tie knots!
